Hong Kong Protests: Demonstrators Defy Police Ban On March

Hong Kong Protest

Police in Hong Kong have reportedly used tear gas and water cannon to disperse many protesters who defied a police ban and marched through the city.

Parliament buildings were set on fire and attacked as thousands joined the march.

Officials had banned an event to mark five years since Beijing ruled out fully democratic elections. On Friday, numbers of key pro-democracy activists and lawmakers were arrested and detained.

A controversial extradition bill, now suspended and which would have allowed criminal suspects to be sent to mainland China for trial led to the protest movement.

The protest has since become violent after many clashes.
